Interview With Float Down The Liffey (2012)

the interview below is an interview with Float Down The Liffey. Ananda did this interview several months ago when they just left by former drummer. After scouring the internet, Ananda was discovering this band and some site said that they were influenced by shoegaze sound, she found it's interesting and she decided to interview them to find out more about the band.

1. First, can you introducing Float Down The Liffey to the reader?

【English】
Float Down The Liffey is a band that active mainly in Tokyo, Japan. the member is: Ichikawa Yuuta (vo/gt) Tsujie Kouta (gt) Mukai Hiroki (ba) Aizawa Yosuke (dr)

Float down the Liffeyは日本の東京を中心に活動しているバンドです。

2. From where did you get the name Float Down The Liffey? And, please tell us the history of the band’s formation.
→FLOAT DOWN THE LIFFEY

【English】
We took the name from Radiohead’s lyric, How To Disappear Completely. we decided this from among the candidate list of favorite band’s lyric. about the formation, we formed the former band with friends at university. And then, the bassist were leaving the band, and Nishi Takeshi came join us, and then we change the band name into Float Down The Liffey.

3. We can say that FDTL is a shoegazer, but your sound is little different (from an usual shoegaze band). Can you please explain to us your kind of music?
→ FLOAT DOWN THE LIFFEYはシューゲイザーと言えば、シューゲイザーなんですけど、サウンドがちょっと違います。

【English】
I think the main focus of our music is Japanese, Europe and American pop, rock, and alternative rock. There, we’re using the element combines metal and shoegazer.

4. Why do you want to play shoegaze?

【English】
we don’t really want to play shoegaze, when we do a live perform we’re often filled the venue with sound. and the rest, we’ve got an influence from our favorite bands (laughter).

5. This is what I want to ask to all the member personally. We’re so glad if you could tell us. What is the meaning of ‘shoegaze’ to you?

【English】
Ichikawa: it’s difficult... because I knew shoegaze from COTD and My Bloody Valentine, so I guess I got a big influence from those bands. I think maybe the pile up of distortion sound and reverb, and making the wall of sound is one of an important thing on shoegaze. so it means, maybe Tomorrow Never Knows or I Want You from The Beatles, which I listen from the old days, was my first experience of listening shoegaze (laughter)

Mukai: people always caught the reflection of shoegaze from the perform style and the image, but I think it doesn’t show the negativity but a pure pop.

6. What do you think about Japanese shoegaze scene?

【English】
If we talk about famous bands, there is Coaltar Of The Deepers, Cruyff In The Bedroom, Luminous Orange etc who represent japanese shoegazer, between the alternative or guitar rock so-called bands, there is a lot of them who use an element of shoegaze. And the other band, like indie or amateur bands, they’re using a lot of elements of shogaze, or even a fast cut shoegaze. So of course I think shoegaze will grow forward.

7. Sunny days E.P. was released on January this year, please tell us the story behind your music and songwriting.
→ Sunny days E.P.

【English】
1. Fade To Blue
Fade to blue, our first song originally was using the second song, white blur’s intro. we made it connected. when we recorded it into CD, we didn’t use the arpeggio guitar and we expressed it such way.

2. White Blur
This song composed by Yamagishi. Because at the phase of demo making, he quite got crafted in songs, so while we perform in on the band, we did some arrangement. We connected it from the first song, the image feels like start from the dawn until the sun rises.

3. Sunnydays
Yamagishi also composed this song. At first we want to arrange it different, but finally we made it at the end. You can find the last part on the middle. we did that in order to make it easier to band. then, because in sabi won’t be a melody just with a humming, so I created the melody for sabi*)

4. Argyi
This song is Ichikawa’s composition. We almost put this on demo step, but we have to perform it approximately to demo. Actually this demo has done in the beginning of 2011, but the sabi can hardly finished and the making of demo was discontinued. when we decided to make a new song and listening to the previous demo, we could make the sabi and it becoming current form.

1. Fade To Blue

2. White Blur

3. Sunnydays

4. Argyi

8. After listening to Sunny days E.P. I really likes Argyi. What is the meaning of ‘Argyi’ itself?
→Sunny days E.P.

【English】
In science, the plant called Akane (madder) actually is ‘Rubia Argyi’. We took the last name and it becoming ‘Argyi’. On the lyric, I sang about the sky color of sunset, in Japan the sky color on evening could be called as akane iro (red), that’s why we put ‘Argyi’.

9. What do you want to express on FDTL’s lyric?

【English】
There is almost no common theme in all lyrics. if we had a song tells about the beginning and the end, then we also had just about love song (laughter)

10. I have seen FDTL’s video live on youtube, do you have an interest to do an overseas live? And, where do you want to do a live?

【English】
we’re really interested to have a live perform in oversea or in our township. I want to have a contact with band outside Japan or even the culture, and I also want to make a friend with the musicians I adore. if we get a chance to be invited, we want to do live performance anywhere. not only USA or Europe, we also want to try to visiting Asia.

11. If you can perform together with your favorite band or musician (overseas or local), with who do you want to perform?

【English】
Right now, we want to perform together with Japanese band, CAUCUS. I think it’ll be great if we can perform together with the other favorite bands.

12. Icchie the vocalist also doing a solo project. What kind of song do you want to create? Do you have a favorite soloist?

【English】
Personally, I want try to do many things that I can’t do on the band. In the contrary, if I want to do the things I can do in the band, so I won’t do solo as much as possible. because I have an interest to ambient music, electronica, and hip hop, I want to create a song such like that. my favorite soloist is Nujabes, Narasaki (from Coaltar Of The Deepers), Oyamada Keigo (Cornelius) and Tokumaru Shuugo.

13. About the leaving of the drummer, with the vacant position, what is FDTL’s activity now?

【English】
Oh yeah, we’re just fixed a new member, but before that we creating song without entering studio, and we kept searching for new member. Soon after the member left us, our mood goes down, and we discussed it to our friend who also doing a band. Because of their support, now we could take back our spirit and we’re really thank them.

14. Beside the band, does FDTL’s member have another job?

【English】
Thank you for listening our song! we’ll create more cool song, so please listen to it. and, if you have a chance to see our live, please come to see, and let’s talk about favorite music together while drinking!

Interview with Texas Pandaa (2010)

Azam Raharjo did this interview two years ago.

This interview was published in Japanese Studies Dept. Student Board Magazine, Cultural Studies Faculty of Gadjah Mada University as a small article about indie music in Japan. This interview also published as an one of the article (translated to Indonesian) of Lightning Sheets--an indiepop photo-copied fanzine managed by Fajar Martha.

This was written before texas pandaa release their 'Down in the Hole' album.

Here's the interview with Nadehiko of texas pandaa via email.

The interview was written in both English and Japanese. Nothing is changed except some typos and grammatical mistakes (some might be still there)

1. Our first question is, Why 'texas pandaa' name? How did you get that name?
→「TEXAS PANDAA」

【English】
It's a long story with no deep meanings... We started out our band as a hobby/cover band. The band was called Texas Banjo Gurentai - "Texas" because we like steaks, and "Banjo Gurentai (total hoodlums)" because we were all mean little kids. The Japanese have this wierd habit of shortening words (e.g. we are often called "teki-pan" short for texas pandaa) so we were called "teki-ban" back then. "ba" and "pa" look quite alike in Japanese letters so most people got confused and started calling us "teki-pan" which eventually became Texas Pandaa. Two "a"s just because we liked the laid-back-nothing-serious look of the word Hawaii, which has two "i"s.

2. How did you guys get together and play music together in this band? What's the story?

【English】
We all went to same unviersity in Tokyo and that's where we met. Asako (guitar & vocals), Mikiko (bass & chorus), and Kaz (guitar) were in the same grade. Nadehiko (drums) is several years senior. We were members of the same music "circle" (after-school-activity-groups common in Japanese schools) during our university years. We were just a hobby band, covering songs for fun.

3. Could you please tell us about your influence in music?

【English】
When we were playing as the fore-mentioned hobby/cover band, we often covered The Sundays, The Darling Buds, Lisa Loeb etc, mainly female vocals - naturally. We were right in the middle of the so-called "Alternative Music" movement when we started out, and that's where we mostly got our influences from.

4. To each member of texas pandaa : 'who/what's your favourite mainstream and indie musicians? What music that you're listening in to lately?

【English】
Asako: The Sundays, The Darling Buds, David Lynch, etc
Mikiko: Lisa Loeb, spangle call lilli line, natsumen etc
Kaz: REM, Coldplay, Mercury Rev, Yo La Tengo, etc
Nadehiko: swervedriver, Aimee Mann, etc

There's tons of bands we listen to - mostly foreign bands, some Japanese indies, but we rarely listen to any Japanese mainstream artists.

The Sundays, The Darling Buds, David Lynch, etc
Lisa Loeb, etc
REM, Coldplay, Mercury Rev, Yo La Tengo, etc

5. What's the story behind your music and songwriting?
→TEXAS PANDAA

【English】
Asako and Mikiko usually come up with partial ideas (e.g. Suddenly: www.texaspandaa.com/songs_in_the_making/090108_suddenly.mp3) then we spend hours and hours, often extending well into months, jamming and finalizing it into a song. Most ideas are triggered from actual personal experiences - sad and heart-breaking. They are directly reflected in the lyrics.

When the songs are finalized, then we do a pre-production recording by ourselves to check how we should proceed with the actual recording. This again takes several weeks to months. We need this process in order to make sure we would be able to record our songs efficiently without having to make big adjustments during the actual recording. Recording studios are quite expensive!

We often fight a lot about the vocals - which notes to use, what kind of tone the songs should be sung in, how a word should be pronunciated etc etc - even after the song itself has been fixed. We don't want to do that at the actual recording.

6. Have you guys ever had the opportunity to play outside of Japan? If so, where?

【English】
Only once - in Taiwan, 2008. We were invited to play the opening act for Yo La Tengo.

7. If you had the opportunity to play again outside of Japan, where would you like to go?

【English】
Anywhere! We would love to visit all kinds of places and meet our fans outside Japan. But realistically speaking, it's quite difficult since we all have our day jobs, and transportation with all our gears could become quite expensive...

8. So you're going to release your next album, "Down in the Hole". Could you please tell us about the preview, sneek-peek, or the story behind about that album ?
→『Down in The Hole』

【English】
Our fans might be a little surprised at how pop "Down In the Hole" became. We are often referred to as "shoegaze music" but that is not how we think about ourselves recently. We have reached a point where we came to think of ourselves as more of a vocal/chorus-oriented band, so we wanted to make an album that transcended such image. We have put much time in vocal/chorus recording compared to our previous guitar-oriented albums.

『Down In the Hole』を聴いて、そのポップさに今までのファンの多くは驚くことと思います。

9. What do you think about the mainstream music scene in Japan ?

【English】
I think mainstream music is boring. Almost every song is "cut out" and "predictable" and digitalized, and the lyrics are so naive. It's not fun. The indie scene is much more exciting for those who care a lot about music.

10. Last one, what's your message to any Texas Pandaa listeners outside of Japan ?

【English】
Thank you all for your support! It is such an honor for us to be listened to overseas, and we are 120% grateful. You are the ones who kept us moving for all these years. Down In the Hole would never have seen the light of day if not for the constant encouragement from you guys. Your encouragements were lifesavers on many a dark night. Please invite us to play in your country! Thank you so much!

Down In the Holeも、みなさんからの絶え間ない声援の賜物です。
